It has an area of 1,737.53 km2 and 2010 census result of 2,125,234 people, for a density of 1,223 people per km2.[1] It is on the outskirts of Jakarta, just outside the Jabodetabek region, and is the site of industrial activity (like factories). However, due to ever expanding Jakarta, it has seen a heavy influx of housing developments as well and a surge of people. To the south lies Purwakarta Regency, it is roughly equidistant from Jakarta and Bandung, the two metropolitan areas combined home to over 40 million people.
An official announcement from Transportation Ministry has chosen Karawang Regency, as the location for a new airport which will provide a third runway of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport with two runways.[2]
